Plein 1940

Plein 1940 is a traffic-free residential square in the center of Rotterdam. From the square, one has a view of the outdoor area of the Maritime Museum on the Leuvehaven which lies to the south of it. The square is adjacent to Blaak and is sandwiched between the Coopvaert buildings and the Maritime Museum.
The square is named after the beginning of the Second World War when the bombardment of Rotterdam reduced a large part of the city to ashes. Central Since 1953, the central statue on the square has been The Destroyed City, created by the French French artist Ossip Zadkine.
